We will also have spectacular views across to the Vilcanota range of mountains. MORAY: We then drive another 15 minutes to this unique site. Natural depressions have been terraced by the Incas and used to make a kind of experimental greenhouse. The temperature gradient thus created was used to ascertain what type of crops could grow in different locations. SALINERAS: or “salt mines” The natural salt in the rocks is filtered out by the use of small salt pans and allowed to dry. These ancient salt mines provide much of the cooking salt for the return to the city of Cusco.
